Veterinaries Keep Their Eyes On the 'Mad Cow' Disease From Romania

A veterinary inspector examines strictly the luggage of the entering Bulgaria Romanians for meat, D-r Valery Velkov, the Chief of the Regional Veterinary Medical Service in Vidin announced before 'Standart'. The expert meets all the ships that transport passengers from Kalafat. Every day through the river station in Vidin 40-50 Romanians enter Bulgaria. According to the Law on Veterinary Medical Activities and the regulations on enforcing it they have the right to import up to 5 kilo of heat treated meat with them. 'It's not true, that the arriving Romanians import meat and sell it in Bulgaria', D-r Velkov denied the information that spread over recently. In Romania the price of the meat is higher than in Bulgaria and if imported the meat couldn't be sold in our country. Yesterday AFP announced that 3 billion euro are needed in order the 'mad cow' crisis to be overcome. This money is threefold more than the amount which the EU budget has at its disposal', the agency points out. Yesterday the Council of the Agrarian Ministers of the 15 EU members gathered in Brussels to discuss the epidemic crisis.
