A unique transplantation of a heart and a lung was carried out at Sofia's Saint Ekaterina hospital. This is the first double transplantation for the East Europe and the first lungs transplantation, carried out in this country, Head of the Cardiology Clinic Prof. Alexander Chirkov said. He was observing the operation in person; it lasted more than 7 hours. Late on Friday night, a team of medics from the hospital and colleagues of theirs from Bulgartransplant took off for Pleven town on a plane, provided by the Health Ministry. There, a patient with brain death had been hospitalized and his parents agreed to his organs being used for transplantation. The heart and lungs of the 17-year-old boy were explanted and were immediately transported to Sofia's Saint Ekaterina Hospital. The organs were delivered for transplantation to 25-year-old Jenny from Sofia, Prof. Chirkov recounted. The girl lived with an artificial heart for more than a month. If she had not received the organs, she would have endured for a couple of days, at its best, Prof. Chirkov said.
