Chirkov Transplanted Heart and Lungs

This operation is the first of its kind in the East Europe. 25-year-old Jenny saved with organs of a boy, who died after a car accident

The unique operation carried out by Prof. Alexander Chirkov and his team of medics saved the life of 25-year-old Jenny Alexandrova from Vidin town. The girl received a new heart and lungs after a 7-hour operation carried out in the Sofia's Saint Ekaterina Hospital. The organs were explanted from a 17-year-old boy, who was diagnosed with brain death after a car accident near Pleven town. This is the first double transplantation for the Eastern Europe, and the first lungs transplantation in this country, Prof. Chirkov said. Late on Friday night, a team of medics from the hospital and their colleagues from Bulgartransplant took off for Pleven town on a plane, provided by the Health Ministry. The heart, lungs and kidneys of the deceased boy were taken from there. His mother offered that the boy's organs be donated for transplantation on her own initiative.

Commissioned Murders Taken out of the Archives

Plain-Clothes Police Officers Ambush for Belts

Plain-clothes highway police officers started mass raids for belts throughout this country, sources from Highway Police said. Violators will be fined 30 levs each. Three people were killed yesterday between the railway stations of Anton and Koprivshtitsa in a car accident when a Moskvich and a train collided.

Hold-up Men Stole 60,000 Levs

A hold-up of 60,000 levs took place at about 3.30 p.m. on Thursday on the Sofia ring-road nearby 'Rafa' gas station. Two cars intersected a BMW with driver Seraphimov (24). The hold-up men stabbed his hand and robbed him of 60,000 levs, the victim maintains. He was hospitalized in 'Pirogov' emergency clinic. Seraphimov has a criminal record, sources from the Sofia Directorate of Interior (SDI) specified. Employees in the gas station called the police by pushing the panic-button. A few minutes later, teams of SDI and Forth Regional Police Department arrived on the scene.

An Airplane Crashed in Kazanlak

A training plane "Piper 92" crashed at the airport in the town of Kazanlak. The incident happened at 2.32 p.m. By some miracle, the commander of the plane Valentin Galabov suffered no injuries. The reason for the crash is not clear yet. Boeing 737 300 of 'Bulgaria Air' landed in emergency at Sofia Airport because of some technical problems, sources from the company voiced. The jet for Madrid was ordered back straight after the takeoff for a damage was discovered onboard.
