Ten Thousand Sleep in front of Monastery

Father Boris banned cameras in the Bachkovo Monastery

Picture
More than 10,000 believers spend the Sunday night praying for health on the lawns and in the yard of the Bachkovo Monastery. Today is the Assumption of Virgin Mary and the day of the monastery's patron saint.
The laymen come here in the days before the Assumption in the hope for healing and send prayers for better life, the monks say. Hundreds of people pray before the miracle-working icon of Virgin Mary kept in the Bachkovo Monastery church. Cameras are not allowed in the church for the first time this year, under an order issued by Father Superior Boris.
Traditionally, the holiday starts at 4:00 p.m. on August 14, when the Father Superior holds a liturgy and performs a holy water sprinkling ceremony.
The Great Vespers starts at 7:00 p.m. Today, it will turn into a mourning prayer. It is believed that on this day Virgin Mary fell asleep and was taken to Heaven by Jesus Christ. This is why we celebrate the Assumption, clergymen say.
