text sizeUSA Lifts Visa Regime for Bulgarians by End 2007
The EU exerts pressure on the USA at the EU-USA summit in Washington
The USA may abrogate visa requirements for the new EU members by the end of 2007, informed the US ambassador to EU C. Boyden Gray, quoted by DPA news agency. Grey said that the legislative basis for including all the EU members in Washington's program for visa-free regime would be ready by the end of 2007. However, he warned that a delay of the process was possible.
Some time ago, in an interview with The Standart the Bulgarian ambassador to the USA Elena Poptodorova explained that it would be difficult to forecast the exact date of visa lifting because of the advanced phase of the primaries campaign in both the Republican and Democratic parties before the presidential elections in 2008. She expressed her hope that this summer the text of the act would be drafted and ready for voting.
Several days ago, the AP announced that at the EU-USA summit in Washington on April 30 the EU would push America to speed up the process of allowing the citizens of all the 27 EU countries to enter the USA without visas. According to Washington, Greece and the new EU members don't meet the requirements. Out of all former Communist countries only the citizens of Slovenia are now allowed to travel to the USA visa-free.
