It Is Unfair, The Decision Steals Our Motivation

We will not act the sulky child, said Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister in charge of EU funds management, Meglena Plugchieva

- Ms Plugchieva, is Brussels's judgment based on actual failures in combating corruption or is just reinsurance in a situation of a financial crisis?
- I do not believe in relatedness between the Government's efforts and the results yielded by the judicial system. No one can expect the Government to interfere with the doings of the independent judicial system. I am extremely disappointed with the decision of Brussels - we have achieved clear results, we have made conspicuous progress. I do not say we are 100% perfect but I would as well ask - which country in the EU is 100% perfect? Where isn't there corruption? And all this to the background of a financial crisis, when the EU is shaking and Bulgaria is stable and does not wait for a financial injection, this decision is inadmissible.
- You have repeatedly stated that the foreign auditors are content with the work done?
- You know that what we did, and I had organized the work at full speed, was approved, I informed Brussels on a regular basis. Even the missions of Mr. Olli Rehn and the foreign auditors were impressed with the progress we had made, with the transparency and with our approach. Is it proper that one thing is said here and the opposite in Brussels?
- You think you were given false judgment here, in Bulgaria?
- I have no whatsoever intention to elaborate on this question. I will only say that this decision stole the motivation of the people who had been working without rest. The young people in the Phare directorate were extremely daunted after this decision. Can you tell me, how we will continue working in this situation? The European Union has violated all principles of support and solidarity.
- So, what will you do?
- We will not act the sulky child. We have not spent these efforts for Brussels's sake but for Bulgaria. We will continue working hard and I hope the European Commission will show fairness and support.
