Bulgarian Accused of Espionage against NATO

A shot from the arrest of Akim and Zikulov (right)
Bulgarian Petar Zikulov and Romanian Florichel Akim were arrested on February 28th in Bucharest on charges for espionage and treason. The prosecutors in the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism kept them behind bars for 24 hours and later the Court of Appeal kept them for other 29 days. A suit was to start against them yesterday but it was postponed for March 5th because the Bulgarian had no defense.
Petar Zikulov is a former military attache of Bulgaria to Romania, Akim is an acting military. The investigation found out that the two accused had used a system thanks to which the Romanian received top-secret documents. Some of them contained NATO secret information and their unclosing is completely forbidden for risk for the security of NATO and Romania. The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry was informed on the case.
Petar Zikulov had been tracked for a couple of years before being caught, the Standart learnt from sources from the Romanian special services. In Romania the Bulgarian was accused of espionage for a third country, not a member of the EU, or NATO.
