Nine embassies in Bulgaria declared their support for the Rainbow Friendship Rally of homosexuals, after right-wing activist Boyan Rassate said for The Telegraph: "Steve Williams has no right to teach Bulgarians how to live in Bulgaria".
The immediate reason for his reaction was the message of support by Steve Williams, Britain's Ambassador to Sofia, addressed to the participants in the event, that is to take place on June 27 in Sofia:
Most of the European ambassadors in Bulgaria backed the parade.
"We sympathize with everyone who have decided to celebrate diversity on this day," said France's Ambassador to Bulgaria Etienne de Poncins.
The ambassadors of Great Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Finland and Sweden voiced their support for the gay march. According to them, the acts of aggression against homosexuals are incompatible with the main principles and values of the EU.
The gay parade was backed by Nancy McEldowney, Ambassador of the USA in Bulgaria.
