text sizeLibya Breaks Relations with UNESCO Because of Bokova
Libya announced that it is freezing its cooperation with the United Nation Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) because of the electing of the Bulgarian representative Irina Bokova as Director-General of the organization, the Switzerland telegraph agency reported. The Libyan delegation in UNESCO "condemns and disapproves" the election of the Bulgarian representative as the organization's head, reads a communique issued today. Libya "would not be happy to be a member of an organization, leaded by a representative of Bulgaria," says the official statement. Libya explained its decision with the violation of international conventions for exchange of prisoners made by Bulgaria by "setting free the Bulgarian nurses, sentenced to imprisonment for life for infecting with AIDS of 450 Libyan children." Libya will freeze its programmes under UNESCO and will withdraw its candidatures for the Executive Bureau and all the committees of the organization.
Last week Irina Bokova has been officially sworn in as UNESCO new Director-General.
