text sizeThe Balkans - the Paradise of Bribes
Bulgaria ranks 71st in the world in corruption rates and the combat against it on all levels is reported to be waged poorly, records the research by the international NGO Transparency International. The survey was carried out in 180 countries among the representatives of the foreign business in them. On the scale from 0 (very corrupted) to 10 (lack of corruption), Bulgaria has been given the index of 3.8. The improvement compared to last year has been of 0.2 points and the higher assessment has been influenced by the unblocking of some of the EU funds for Bulgaria after GERB stepped in power.
Within the EU, along with Greece and Romania, Bulgaria is considered the most corrupted country. The average index for the EU countries is 6.36.
The reasons lie in the cumulated impressions of the powerless battle of the former rulers against corruption - especially at the end of their term of office. Let's keep in mind the fact that in 2007 our index stood at 4.1. The economic crisis is an active factor that results in a greater number of shady deals in all parts of the world.
"Bulgaria lacks "integrated strategy for curbing corruption,"" said sources from Transparency Without Borders Association, a Transparency representative for Bulgaria.
"In spite of the adopted laws, in order the conflict of interest is prevented, these laws are not applied yet," the Association experts are explicit.
For the first time Bulgaria is included in the classification in 1998, when the country's corruption index stood at 2.9.
