text sizeEurope Slams Bulgaria over Waste Management
PM Borissov promises Barroso to find a prompt solution to the problem
The European Commission has launched legal proceeding against Bulgaria over waste management, Brussels said yesterday.
The sanction comes after Sofia failed to fulfill the EU requirements on waste collection and landfill management, but the Sofia Municipality and the ministries of environment and foreign affairs appealed the decision of the European Commission.
The appeal caught little ground in Brussels and the EU authorities coolly explained that the proceedings had already started, following Sofia’s failure to set up an efficient waste management system.
“Bulgaria’s capital is accused of infringing the common waste management regulations of the EU,” said Mrs. Barbara Helfferich, Spokesperson for the Environment with the European Commission.
In case a guilty verdict is passed, Sofia’s infringement might cost the state budget between thirty and fifty thousand euro a day.
Sources from the Sofia municipality said that the case might be suspended and a waste management plant might be built during this period.
During talks with EC President Barroso, Bulgaria’s PM Boyko Borissov assured him that Sofia’ waste issue will be resolved within two years.
