Some 3,000 elderly Bulgarians wait to be accommodated in retirement homes.
In Minister Mladenov’s words, the closing of orphanages will be the main stree in the policy of the social ministry in 2011. According to the national strategy "the idea is to move as many as possible inmates of orphanages to foster families by 2014 and close down these institutions. It is planned that the kids would be adoptedplaced by people who would take care of them or accommodate them in care centers. Minister Mladenov explained that three ministries will work towards this under three operational programs.
