Supermarkets Sell Foods of Questionable Quality

It is a common practice in Bulgaria supermarket chains to sell goods, which don’t have the respective food safety certificate, Ivan Savov – regional director of Intertek certification company stated. In his words, by this moment it is hard to find goods with safety certificate in Bulgarian supermarkets as in 90% of the cases consumers don’t know what they are eating. A meeting with Agriculture Minister will be held on Monday to discuss strengthening of control on foods offered in supermarket chains and requirement of safety certificates. It turns out that in Bulgaria there are just twenty certified producers of fruits and vegetables. It is expected by the end of 2011 more laboratories for testing of foods to be founded. In the last 10 years between 60M and 80M euro were paid to foreign labs, because Bulgarian laboratories lack capacity to fulfill all orders for testing.
