Professor Ovcharov shows the frescoes painted in gold, which were discovered in the excavations

Bulgarian archaeologists, professor Nikolay Ovcharov and Hitko Vachev discovered painted in gold frescoes dating back to the beginning of 15th century. The frescoes featuring images of saints were laid in a tomb southeast from the royal church St. St. Peter and Paul under Tsarevets hill in the town of Veliko Tarnovo. Most probably the frescoes had fallen down from the northern wall of the church during a devastating earthquake in the second half of the 16th century, scientists believe. Archaeologists have found over 10 fragmented images of saints and a very well preserved image of a bishop, who participated in some of the ecumenical councils. Among the finds are a lot of pieces from rolls with inscriptions in Old Bulgarian language, professor Ovcharov told.
Archaeologists think that the frescoes were made by at least two artists while one of them could well be Master Nicholas of Byzantium.
