GERB Convincingly Wins Local Vote in Bulgaria


The ruling political party GERB has won the local vote in all municipal centers and big towns from the capital Sofia to the coastal city of Varna, while their Presidential candidate Rossen Plevneliev has reached the run-off with a comfortable twelve-percent margin ahead of Ivaylo Kalfin of the Bulgarian Socialist Party. The two-in-one vote in Bulgaria (local and Presidential) will be remembered by the long lines in front of the polling stations across the country, which necessitated the Election Day’s extension by one hour.
Nationwide, the ruling GERB party has won 40% of the local vote, followed by the Bulgarian Socialist Party with 24%.
Sources from GERB’s campaigning HQ said they would uncork bottles of champagne only after the runoff, but added that their convincing victory was expected.
Sergey Stanishev, leader of the major contender, the Bulgarian Socialist Party has countered that ruling GERB has lost several thound votes as compared with the previous elections. In contrast the Socialist have garnered 250,000 votes more. In Sofia the incumbent mayor Yordanka Fandukova has won a convincing victory for the second term of office. She leads with 51 percent leaving far behind the Socialists? nominee Georgi Kadiev (22 percent). The hopeful of the right-wing Blue Coalition Proshko Proshkov won 12,5 percent of the votes in the race for the mayor?s office in Sofia.
