Bulgaria’s Deputy PM, Simeon Djankov showed high interest in the treasures supposedly lying under the Tsarevets Hill in Veliko Tarnovo, the Bulgarian medieval capital. On Monday, after the discussion organized by the Standart within Bulgaria’s Wonders 2 campaign that took place in Veliko Tarnovo, VPM Simeon Djankov toured the churches and monasteries in the city. “I could not imagine there was such a church as Sts Peter and Paul at the feet of Tsarevets, only a couple of metres from the Holy Forty Martyrs Cathedral. The temple is well preserved in its authenticity and as such is very suitable to apply for UNESCO aegis,” Djankov told archeologists.
He promised he would return to Veliko Tarnovo in the beginning of May to see the golden room in the regional Museum of History. This hall holds 840 coins discovered by Prof Nikolay Ovcharov and his colleague, Associate Prof. Hitko Vachev. These coins date back from to 11th-the beginning of 19th centuries. Two of them are especially precious because they were minted by medieval Bulgarian tsars Ivan Shishman and Konstantin Assen. Djankov unofficially informed archeologists that the roundtable organized by the Standart would be followed by a new gathering in the Eastern Rhodopes, most probably in Kardjali.
