A 1.5m-high flood wave hit the village of Dubene in the region of Karlovo on Wednesday and caused chaos and panic among the local people, who suspect the Sopot dam, but not the mild rain trickling over the village at that time, of being the main culprit for the tragedy. Luckily, no casualties have been reported.
Investigating authorities suggest that the tidal wave was caused by the torrential rain in the area, but not by the dam's opened safety valves.
Teams of the Civil Protection Agency and the local fire brigade have been deployed in the area to clear off the mud and debris.
Deputy PM Tsvetan Tsvetanov, Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov and Plovdiv District Governor Zdravko Dimitrov arrived in Dubene early yesterday morning. They were joined by Karlovo Mayor Emil Kabaivanov and Vulko Shoylekov, mayor of Dubene.
