Patriarch’s vicar serves around-the-clock mass in Pernik
Day and night the residents of a small miners’ town of Pernik devastated by the recent persistent earthquakes are sending prayers to their patron saint, St. Ivan of Rila. Since May 22, when a tremor of M 5.8 on the Richer scale rocked the town, vicar of Patriarch Maxim bishop Johann reads special prayers from the Proper calling for repentance and contrition. A particle of the St. Ivan of Rila mortal remains is kept in Pernik and the people hope that it will save the town from further disasters. Tomorrow, on the eve of the International Childrens’ Day Bishop Johann will serve a mass for the children. The mass will start at 5 p.m. at the request of town’s mayor Rostitsa Yanakieva. The locals asked farther Johann to bring to Pernik the relics of St. John the Baptist kept in the Rila Monastery. They hope that the Holy Synod will not defy their request.
