President Rosen Plevneliev has decided against going to Moscow in November for the Days of the Bulgarian Culture to be held in the Russian capital. The Bulgarian head of state has not officially given up on a visit but wants guarantees that he will be received on an adequately high political level. “I will not go to Moscow to look like a laughing stock, we are still negotiating the terms,” the President said in Vienna. The draft program of his visit envisaged a meeting with his Russian colleague Vladimir Putin.
“We are not the Trojan Horse of Russia in Europe and I do not see why the projects of the Energy Grand Slam have to be implemented just because these are Russian projects if there are no sufficient economic grounds for their realization,” Plevneliev said flat. He added that if natural gas or oil is found in the Bulgarian offshore area, which is currently prospected by Total, this may change the route of the Nabucco pipeline. The most probable scenario now is that the pipe will pass through Greece to Italy. Should gas be discovered in Bulgaria the route from Turkey via Bulgaria to Austria will become more advantageous, Plevneliev explained. He reiterated that he will work staunchly towards the energy independence of Bulgaria.
