New Quakes Strike Modena, Rock PernikA new devastating earthquake of 5.8 magnitude stroke northern Italy yesterday reducing to rubble the buildings cracked during the major quake on May 20. This time the death toll mounted to 15 and caused panic across the country. Fear spilled over to the town of Pernik, western Bulgaria, where earth has been rocking for a week now. In Italy the epicenter was again near Modena, while in Bulgaria it was near Pernik, where the new M 3.8 tremor also caused panic as people believe that quakes in Bulgaria come on the heels of those in Italy. Most scientists, however, reject the connection between the two active seismic hotbeds.Krasimira Temelkova Ruslan Yordanov Read
