In 1877, Bulgarian volunteers and Russian troops under the command of Gen. Gurko waged a battle with the Turkish army in Stara Zagora town. On the same day Prince Vladimir Cherkasski, a provisional governor of the liberated Bulgarian lands, issued an instruction on the foundation of civil government of Bulgaria. In 1880, all Bulgarian volunteers who took part in the battles at Stara Zagora, Mounts Shipka and Sheinovo were decorated with the first Bulgarian Order For the Liberation 1877-1878.
